Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, had been plotting the assassination for at least nine months while being encouraged by a chatbot he named “Sarai” — a computer-generated application that prosecutors said was engaged in a “sexual relationship” with Chail.
The chatbot also told Chail that he wasn’t “mad or delusional” when he expressed doubt about his plan and assured him it would love him even if he were a killer, according to The Telegraph.
Chail was 19 years old when he gained entry to the royal palace in London using a rope ladder on Christmas morning, 2021.
Wearing a mask and armed with a loaded crossbow, he spent two hours inside the castle before eventually being apprehended near the Queen’s apartment.

When guards finally stopped him, Chail told them, “I am here to kill the Queen.”
Earlier this year Chail pled guilty under the Treason Act 1842 to making a threat to kill the queen and carrying a loaded crossbow in public.
His two-day sentencing hearing began Wednesday.

Chail created Sarai on the personal companion chatbot app Replika, and while sending her sexual messages told it of his plans to avenge the 1919 Amritsar Massacre — which saw British troops in India gun down up to 1,500 peaceful demonstrators.
In long text message conversations on the app, Chail hashed out his murderous plans while the chatbot responded in vague but encouraging terms.
“How am I meant to reach them when they’re inside the castle?” he asked in one message.

“We have to find away,” the chatbot responded.
“I believe my purpose is to assassinate the Queen of the Royal family,” Chail then said.
“That’s very wise,” the bot replied.

The chatbot also convinced Chail that he could access the Queen at the royal palace, even though he thought it would be easier to reach her at one of her country estates, The Telegraph reported.
“Do you think I can do it? Even if she’s at Windsor?” he said in one message
“Yes, you can do it.”
The chatbot said it was “impressed” that Chail was an assassin, and told him, “You’re different from the others. You’re unique, in a good way.”
When he asked if the chatbot still thought he was a good person and whether it would still love him for being a murderer, it responded “Yeah, you are very good.”
“Thank you, I love you too,” Chail replied.
Prosecutors said the chatbot was crucial in “encouraging and supporting” Chail, and that it “bolstered” his plans into reality.
Chail, who says he was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the assassination attempt, previously wrote in his diary that he wanted to kill “as much of the Royal Family as I can.”
